When will Edge have a control to set closed captioning to "off" instead of "auto-generated"?

It is annoying to constantly shut off the closed captioning called "auto-generated" on Edge videos.

As a former hobbyist programmer it seems a simple fix would be to preset this in Edge to OFF with the same option to choose "auto-generated" captions if you have a hard time understanding the speaker. Failing that, please provide a completely different version of Edge for those who do not want to read along if that is what you have to do. The majority of videos today have chirons for the important points that are duplicates of the closed captioning. It's messy.

Why is this so hard to fix? I have seen thread after thread of this removed. Are you trying to teach people English? I have excellent word skills and don't need it or want it. I am 73 years old and have been commenting on this for over 5 years.

Hi Gregory Wadleigh, I completely understand how frustrating this must be having to turn captions off every single time feels like an unnecessary hassle especially when you’ve been asking for a simple OFF means OFF option for years.

To stop auto-generated captions in Edge turn off Live Captions in both Edge and Windows settings disable captions on sites like YouTube Vimeo or Microsoft 365 and if they still appear hide them with a browser extension like uBlock. For managed devices ask your admin to lock captions off using Edge policy.

Are the captions you want to disable mostly coming from Edge Live Captions feature or are they generated by specific sites like YouTube and Vimeo so I can suggest the most effective solution for your situation?

    Best regards

    Lucky
