Despite instructions/suggestions from the web, the random system32/win pop up window won't go away.

The issue of a black screen or a pop-up window related to "system32/win" can often be attributed to problems with the Windows shell or user profile not loading correctly. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Reset the Graphics Driver: Press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. This can sometimes resolve display issues.
    2. Check Shell Configuration:
      • Press the Windows logo key + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and check the Shell value data. It should be set to explorer.exe. If it is not, back up the registry and change it to explorer.exe.
      • Ensure the permissions for this registry key are the same as those on a functioning device.
    3. Perform a Clean Boot: This can help identify if a startup application or service is causing the issue. Follow the instructions for performing a clean boot in Windows.
    4. Check for Application Errors: Open the Event Viewer by pressing the Windows logo key + R, typing eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. Look for "Event ID 1000" in the Application log to see if any applications are stopping unexpectedly, particularly explorer.exe or userinit.exe.
    5. Capture Process Dumps: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you can capture process dumps of explorer.exe and userinit.exe to analyze what might be causing the problem. Use tools like ProcDump to create these dumps when the issue occurs.

If these steps do not resolve the problem, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

    Hi,

That black system32/win pop-up usually means something is trying to run a command during startup often due to corrupted system files, incorrect shell settings, or a rogue startup entry.

The fastest way to fix it is:

Repair system files with sfc /scannow and DISM /RestoreHealth.

Check Winlogon Shell in the registry (should be explorer.exe).

Clean Boot and use Autoruns to disable suspicious tasks.

Run a full malware scan just to be safe.

     I hope this helps!
