my spouse upgraded from basic to family and sent me a invite to share family--however it says I already have a subscription--I think it is a old one that should no longer be active but Im not sure and do not want to delete to cause any problems please advise thank you

If your account says it still has a subscription open this link and login with the account.
https://account.microsoft.com/services
It will show you any active subscriptions that you have and details regarding the subscription, It's up to you if you want to keep this or cancel it and get a new one.
