hi there, on my surface recently tried to update date it the last week, even thoe it update all the time, i am 100% it already has 24h2 on it, but it still says 23h2, i see there a 25h2 out, but each time it comes up 24h2, downloading then install 8 % it fails keep doing it, even tried windows 11 assistant yet again nothing happens, how i can i update this version please

That is very strange. I think your next step is to download the 25H2 ISO, https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows11 mount the ISO and do a repair install, keep everything. If that does not fix the issue, open an administrative cmd prompt and type in the following and press Enter

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

When that has finished, from the admin cmd prompt run

sfc/scannow

(I personally had some weirdness on 5 computers recently with 25H2 trying to install over and over again and this is what fixed the problem for me.)

This is what I did after many attempts which until three days ago, it showed up, goes through the download and install then nothing as on the last try it install 25h2, straight away and it been updating no issue till, this, I don't really go through everything again trying to put everything back on it why I am asking to wipe everything any internal settings that came with, I buy new copy start from scratch

@andy1494 so after using the official recovery image and wiping everything and starting fresh, and before installing any of your own software, you used Windows Update and successfully installed 25H2 and now it suddenly reports 24H2? Can you verify this by running winver and also run msinfo and reply with the OS Name and Version. Then, can you go to Windows Update, Update history and get a screen shot of Feature Updates and post it here.

You should not have to BUY a copy of Windows 11 and clean install it (and it does not have the needed Surface drivers).

This shows you are running 25H2. Where are you seeing it is running 24H2?

Hi barb, sorry for late reply, after few attempt at the moment it gone,. But yet again and update doing the same from last night I tried about 5 time all fail after 41% I have looked in here there few with same issue, I been trying few plus someone put link to YouTube again nothing, here screenshot off it

hi there not sure what that link you ask me to try, for myself lot off the cmd didn't work, at the very last part off it that update disappeared then i never seen before an update came on for 25h2 repair, i let that update, touch wood i just tried it again few update that was there has done without any issue, so thanks again for your help

Hi Andy,

This issue can happen for a few reasons:

Corrupted update files or remnants from previous installations may be interfering.

Compatibility blocks might be in place due to specific drivers or firmware not being ready for 24H2.

Windows Update cache may be misreporting the version or retrying the same update.

Staged rollout delays can cause confusion if your device is eligible but not yet fully cleared for the upgrade.

Even if the update appears to download, it may silently fail during installation and revert without showing a clear error.

What You Can Try

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run the Windows Update tool.

Reset Windows Update Components Use Command Prompt (Admin) to clear the update cache:

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Restart your Surface and try updating again.

Use the ISO Upgrade Method Download the Windows 11 ISO, mount it, and run setup.exe. Choose Upgrade this PC now to manually install 24H2.

Check for Known Blocks Visit the Windows Release Health Dashboard to see if your device is affected by any temporary holds.

Andy,

I'm so sorry your Surface is in this state. Unfortunately, at this point, the Downloadable Recovery Image specific to your Surface Pro 9 is the solution. Use the latest version available for your Surface, and then use Windows Update to further update. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface-recovery-image - Hopefully some of your files are stored in OneDrive if you used the default locations and a Microsoft Account.

Download the files extract them on to USB, nothing happen, keep going back to blue screen even try option in there, just wish I never touched it now from what I was advise,

Boot to the UEFI, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/how-to-use-surface-uefi-df2c8942-dfa0-859d-4394-95f45eb1c3f9 - go to Boot Configuration, drag USB Storage to the top of the list. Then Exit and restart. Then hold down the power button to turn off. Does it now boot from the USB? These are the steps:

What size USB stick did you use? Should be a 16 or 32 GB USB stick formatted FAT32 with a different Windows PC. If changing UEFI settings don't help, can you get an image of the blue screen with choices with a cell phone and upload that here (or at least describe exactly what is on the screen).

Andy,

The Surface is not "seeing" the USB stick as bootable. Was the USB stick prepared on a different Windows computer? Is it a 16 or 32GB (not larger) capacity USB stick? Did you try both USB-C ports? If yes, the only other recommendation is to try a new, previously unused 16 or 32GB USB-C stick and prepare according to the instructions. Think it a larger USB don't have it with at the moment. I look after if got smaller USB, one I don't no any near me, if no joy, might be home insurance first

Andy, A larger USB over 32GB could definitely be the issue. And again, it needs to be prepared in another computer running Windows 10 or 11. I don't have any other suggestions.

Curry's is Microsoft's Service Partner in the UK. Are you able to get to a Curry's store? "For current locations and more information, please visit Currys' website to book a repair. "

If you can't get to a Curry's location, you will need to send your Surface in to Microsoft.

There is a few curry in our area, I can go next time I am near one, roughly what will I be looking at, as it only has to be software issue, everything else was working, till I followed instruction, unless it a hard?

On the Blue Screen, what happens if you select Troubleshoot, Recover?

USB stick must be 16 or 32GB, formatted FAT32 with a WINDOWS computer. Do not use Rufus
