Surface Book - Black Screen

Morning

System: Windows 11 all updates applied

Frequently but randomly the screen my surface book will go "black". The laptop appears to have been powered off, but it has not been. I can depress the space bar, depress the mouse pad or depress power button (very infrequent). After the key depression, the black screen becomes a light gray in color. After a short interval, the system displays the screen that was displayed prior to the black screen.

Sometimes, the cycle repeats itself for several cycles and then is OK.

My wife has noted a similar problem has occurred on her Lenon laptop with a current version of Windows 10.

I should have added that the problem occurs if the Surface is on battery or is connected to an outlet.

Thank you for posting your inquiry here in Microsoft Community, torbar.

I'm sorry to hear about the display issue on your Surface. I will do my best to assist.

Try to perform the methods below:

    • Force the device to restart while it's on. Press the power button for 20 seconds while the device is on.
    • Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update.
    • Run the System File Checker.
    • Install the drivers package manually.
    • Check the specific OS build of your Windows SettingsSystemAbout.
    • Download the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book 3 and click download on the next page.
    • Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.
    • After the download, runand installthe .msi then Restart the Surface Device

Let me know how everything goes after the steps above by replying on this thread.

    Morning

    A clarification question:

Force a restart when the black screen displays or when a "normal" screen displays?

Force the restart may take some days to occur as it does not do it every day.

Try to force restart the device when the black screen issue happens. Also, make sure to manually update the drivers using the methods above.

    John

Will do. When It occurs, I will have to go to my desktop and log on to the app that I was executing. The app will automatically log me off the Surface and I hope to not cause any change in the Surface state.

Try to also check if there are errors recorded in reliability history. Go to search > search for reliability history.
